What Makes Woolwax Different

Woolwax is a thick, thixotropic coating made primarily from lanolin — the natural grease extracted from sheep’s wool. Manufactured by Kellsport Industries in the United States, Woolwax was engineered specifically for automotive corrosion protection in salt-belt climates. Unlike petroleum-based products or hardening rubberized coatings, Woolwax remains permanently soft and pliable, which gives it properties that rigid coatings simply cannot match.

The key advantage is Woolwax’s ability to self-heal. When the coating is scratched, nicked, or disturbed by road debris, it flows back together and re-seals the damaged area. Rigid coatings like rubberized undercoating crack and chip over time, creating gaps where moisture penetrates and corrosion begins underneath — sometimes worse than having no coating at all, because the moisture gets trapped beneath the hard shell. Woolwax eliminates this failure mode entirely.

Because Woolwax remains fluid under pressure, it’s applied at 70–90 PSI and penetrates deep into box sections, frame rails, body seams, and enclosed cavities that solid coatings can’t reach. It creeps along surfaces over time, finding its way into micro-crevices and weld joints where corrosion typically initiates. This active migration is unique to lanolin-based products and is a significant advantage for comprehensive protection.

Woolwax Lifespan: 3–5 Years

On exposed undercarriage surfaces, Woolwax provides effective protection for 3–5 years, after which touch-ups may be required. In enclosed body cavities (door panels, rocker panels, frame rail interiors), Woolwax protection is essentially indefinite because the product is shielded from UV exposure and physical abrasion — the two factors that degrade it on exposed surfaces.

How We Apply Woolwax

Lift & Inspect

Your vehicle goes on the lift for a full undercarriage inspection. We document existing corrosion, note areas of concern, and establish a pre-treatment baseline. This inspection is always free.

Pressure Wash & Degrease

The entire undercarriage is thoroughly cleaned to remove road grime, salt residue, oil, and loose material. Woolwax bonds best to clean metal — proper prep is non-negotiable.

Cavity Injection (Rustproofing)

If your package includes body rustproofing, we inject Woolwax into all enclosed body cavities first — door panels, rocker panels, pillars, and frame rail interiors — using specialized wands that reach deep inside.

Undercarriage Application

Using professional spray equipment at 70–90 PSI, we coat the entire undercarriage: frame rails, cross members, wheel wells, brake lines, fuel lines, suspension mounts, and all exposed metal surfaces. Multiple passes ensure thorough coverage.

Final Inspection & Documentation

We verify complete coverage on the lift, document the work performed, and prepare your vehicle for pickup. You’ll receive care instructions and information about when touch-ups may be needed.

Common Woolwax Questions

Is Woolwax safe for all vehicles?

Yes. Woolwax is solvent-free and non-toxic. It will not damage rubber components, wiring, plastic, or painted surfaces. It’s safe for every make and model, from daily drivers to classics.

Does Woolwax wash off in rain or car washes?

No. Woolwax is formulated to resist water washout. Its lanolin base naturally repels water. Normal driving in rain and occasional car washes will not remove the coating. Only sustained high-pressure washing directly on coated surfaces will gradually thin it.

Can Woolwax be applied over existing rust?

Woolwax can be applied over surface rust and will slow or stop its progression by sealing out moisture and oxygen. However, it cannot reverse structural rust damage that has already occurred. For heavily corroded vehicles, we may recommend mechanical rust removal in affected areas before application.

How does Woolwax compare to Fluid Film?

Both are lanolin-based, but Woolwax is thicker and has a longer service life (3–5 years vs. 1–2 years for Fluid Film). Woolwax’s thixotropic formula provides heavier build-up on surfaces and better long-term protection between re-applications. See our brand comparison page for a detailed breakdown.

When is the best time to apply Woolwax?

Ideally before your vehicle’s first Calgary winter. Fall is peak season, but Woolwax can be applied year-round. For used vehicles, applying before salt season starts (October–November) provides maximum benefit for the coming winter.
