General Questions

What is undercoating?

Undercoating is a protective coating applied to the exposed underside of your vehicle — frame rails, wheel wells, suspension components, brake lines, and other vulnerable metal surfaces. It creates a barrier between the metal and corrosive elements like road salt, moisture, and gravel. Professional undercoating uses either a soft, self-healing formula (Woolwax) or a permanent rubberized barrier (3M).

What’s the difference between undercoating and rustproofing?

Undercoating protects exposed undercarriage surfaces. Rustproofing protects enclosed body cavities (inside door panels, rocker panels, pillars) where moisture gets trapped. They target different areas and different corrosion types. Most vehicles benefit from both. See our detailed comparison for the full breakdown.

Do new vehicles need undercoating?

Yes. Factory corrosion protection is minimal — typically just an e-coat (electrocoat primer) that’s adequate for mild climates but insufficient for Calgary’s heavy salt exposure. New vehicles are actually the ideal candidates because you’re applying protection before any corrosion begins. See our new vehicle undercoating page for details.

Can you undercoat a vehicle that already has rust?

Yes, with caveats. Surface rust can be treated — we’ll clean it and apply product over it (Woolwax is particularly effective here as it encapsulates surface rust). However, structural rust damage that’s already eaten through metal cannot be reversed by any coating. We assess every vehicle before starting and will flag any areas of concern.

Product Questions

What is Woolwax made from?

Woolwax is made primarily from lanolin — the natural grease extracted from sheep’s wool. It’s manufactured by Kellsport Industries in the USA. The formula contains zero solvents, is non-toxic, and is environmentally safe. It remains permanently soft and self-healing, meaning it flows back together after scratches or impacts.

How long does Woolwax last?

On exposed undercarriage surfaces, Woolwax provides effective protection for 3–5 years, after which touch-ups may be required. In enclosed body cavities (door panels, rockers, frame interiors), protection is essentially indefinite because the product is shielded from UV and physical abrasion.

Is 3M undercoating really permanent?

Yes. 3M Rubberized Undercoating (#08883) cures into a permanent rubberized barrier. It’s been independently tested to 1,500 hours of ASTM B117 salt fog exposure. Once properly applied and cured, it doesn’t degrade under normal driving conditions. Severe impacts can chip it, but those areas can be touched up.

Which product should I choose — Woolwax or 3M?

Woolwax is better for: tighter budgets, older vehicles, vehicles you may sell within 5 years, and people who prefer a natural/re-applicable product. 3M is better for: long-term vehicle ownership, new vehicles, trucks, and people who want one-time permanent protection plus sound deadening. See our brand comparison for a full analysis.

Application Questions

How long does the application take?

Most applications are completed same-day. Allow 3–5 hours depending on the package. Woolwax undercoating + rustproofing typically takes 3–4 hours. 3M packages take 4–5 hours due to cure time requirements. Drop your vehicle off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon.

Do I need to do anything to prepare my vehicle?

No — we handle all preparation. Our process includes a full pressure wash and degreasing of the undercarriage before any product is applied. Just bring your vehicle in and we take care of the rest.

What time of year is best for undercoating?

Ideally before winter (September–November), but undercoating can be applied year-round. For new vehicles, the sooner the better. If your vehicle has already been through winters, don’t wait — every additional salt season without protection causes more cumulative damage.

Can I drive immediately after?

For Woolwax: yes, you can drive immediately. The product is applied in its working state and begins protecting right away. For 3M: yes, but avoid gravel roads for 24 hours while the coating fully cures. Normal city/highway driving is fine immediately.

Aftercare Questions

Can I go through car washes after undercoating?

Yes. Regular car washes (touchless or soft-touch) will not affect your undercoating. Avoid using high-pressure underbody wash options frequently with Woolwax, as sustained direct pressure can gradually thin the coating over time. 3M is unaffected by car washes of any type.

Will undercoating void my vehicle warranty?

No. Professional undercoating does not void any manufacturer warranty. It’s a protective addition — similar to paint protection film or ceramic coating — and doesn’t modify any vehicle systems. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (US) and similar Canadian consumer protection law prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranties due to aftermarket protective products.

How do I know when Woolwax needs reapplication?

We recommend a visual check after 3 years. Signs that touch-up is needed: bare metal visible in wheel wells, loss of the waxy feel on coated surfaces, or thin/spotty coverage on frame rails. Enclosed cavity protection will still be intact and won’t need refreshing.

Pricing Questions

How much does undercoating cost?

Our packages range from $199 (Woolwax body rustproofing) to $1,199 (3M ultimate package). The most popular package is the Woolwax undercoating + rustproofing combo at $599. See our complete pricing guide for all packages and what’s included.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. Our listed prices include everything: inspection, pressure washing, surface preparation, product, application, and final quality check. No extra charges for vehicle size, condition, or “premium” preparation. The price on the website is the price you pay.

Do you charge more for trucks or SUVs?

No. Our pricing is flat regardless of vehicle type or size. Trucks, SUVs, sedans, and crossovers all pay the same price for any given package.
