You’ve probably done a walk-around of your truck, looked at the undercarriage with a flashlight, maybe even crawled under there with a inspection mirror, and thought, “Okay, it looks fine.” But here’s what you probably didn’t see: the rust spots that aren’t yet visible but are actively corroding your truck. Some of these are in places you literally cannot access without disassembly. Others are hidden by normal factory components and design features.
Understanding where these spots are and why they’re vulnerable is the first step toward protecting them before damage becomes irreversible.
## The Spots You Can’t See Without Inspection
### Inside Door Sills and Rocker Panels
Drive up any street in Calgary and look at trucks that have been through several winters untreated. You’ll see rust staining on the lower sides of the doors, usually in a horizontal line. That staining means rust is happening inside the door sill and rocker panel—metal structures that run the full length of the lower side of the truck.
These areas are vulnerable because:
– They’re hollow channels (structural design requires them to be)
– Water and salt-laden spray get trapped inside through seams and openings
– The interior is difficult to dry out
– Once corrosion starts, the rust spreads laterally inside the channel before breaking through to the outside
A truck with interior door sill corrosion might look fine from the outside, but inside that channel, the steel is actively pitting. When the corrosion finally breaches to the exterior, the damage is already months or years advanced.
### The Gaps Behind Trim and Moldings
Where bumpers connect to the frame, where trim pieces meet the body, and where rubber seals close gaps—these are seams that look fine from a distance but can trap moisture. Behind a bumper, water and salt spray can pool against the frame, and that area is difficult to reach and coat.
The gap might be only a few millimeters, but it’s an ideal environment for corrosion: trapped moisture, salt, and oxygen with minimal airflow.
### Suspension Component Mounting Points
Where shock absorbers, control arms, and suspension bars connect to the frame, there are complex joints and welds. These aren’t smooth surfaces; they’re mechanically intricate with lots of surface area and crevices.
Corrosion often starts at these joints because:
– Welded joints have surface roughness that traps moisture
– Multiple metal pieces come together, creating crevices where a barrier coating is incomplete
– Salt spray from the road gets directed upward into these components
– The joints are mechanically stressed, so any corrosion weakens their structural integrity
A truck’s handling, ride quality, and safety depend on suspension components being strong and structurally sound. Corrosion at mounting points undermines that completely.
### Inside Wheel Wells
The wheel well is where the tire, suspension, and frame come together. It’s exposed to intense salt spray whenever you drive on salted roads. The inside surfaces of wheel well trim (usually plastic on modern trucks) are backed by steel structure.
If the plastic trim separates or cracks, water runs directly onto the backing steel. The area is partially enclosed, so water doesn’t drain away easily. Mud and salt accumulate. The result is aggressive corrosion in a spot you rarely think about.
Look inside wheel wells regularly, especially at the seams where trim meets the frame. If you see rust staining or corrosion, it means the backing steel is already being eaten away.
### The Underside of the Bed Floor
If you drive a truck with a pickup bed, the underside of the bed floor is exposed to splashing from the road and water dripping from the back of the cab. This horizontal surface is a terrible place for water retention—it doesn’t drain naturally; it pools.
Without protection, the underside of a bed floor can rust through within a few years in Alberta. The corrosion is invisible until holes form and water starts dripping into anything stored under the tonneau cover.
A spray-in bed liner protects the interior surface. But the exterior underside? That’s often neglected, and it’s where serious corrosion happens.
### Between the Frame and the Bed
When a pickup bed is mounted to the frame, there’s a junction between them. Water seeps into this gap from above, and it pools on top of the frame at that junction. This is a high-corrosion zone that’s mostly inaccessible without removing the bed.
Trucks with corroded frames often have the worst damage in this exact location.
## The Places That Are Hard to Treat
Even if you know about these spots, treating them is challenging.
**Door sills and rocker panels** are hollow, so you can’t spray into them effectively without special equipment that feeds the protective coating through small openings. A penetrating fluid like Woolwax is more effective here because it can be applied to seams and drain holes, and gravity will help it distribute inside the cavity.
**Behind trim and moldings** is difficult because the trim needs to stay attached. You can’t spray behind a bumper without potentially damaging paint or creating overspray. Woolwax, with its low viscosity, can seep behind trim more effectively.
**Suspension mounting points** are mechanically complex. A barrier coating (like 3M undercoating) might miss crevices. A penetrating coating that can work its way into the joint is more effective.
**Wheel well backing surfaces** are partially obscured by the wheel itself. Access is limited, and these areas are difficult to coat uniformly.
**Bed floor undersides** are, by definition, inverted. Gravity works against you if you’re trying to apply a protective coating.
## Why These Spots Corrode Faster
Beyond just being hard to access, these spots corrode faster than exposed surfaces for specific reasons:
1. **Trapped moisture**: These areas retain water longer because drainage is poor or non-existent
2. **Concentrated salt**: Water pools and evaporates, concentrating dissolved salt on the metal surface
3. **Limited airflow**: Without air circulation, the electrochemical reaction that causes corrosion proceeds uninterrupted
4. **Mechanical stress**: Suspension joints and frame mounting points experience constant stress from driving, which accelerates corrosion of weakened metal
5. **Lack of protection**: These areas are often overlooked during initial undercoating or rustproofing applications
## How to Protect Spots You Can’t See
The honest answer: you can’t eliminate the problem entirely, but you can dramatically reduce the risk.
**Comprehensive rustproofing** is the approach. This means:
– Apply barrier coatings (3M Professional Grade Undercoating) to all exposed frame surfaces and suspension components you *can* reach and spray
– Use penetrating treatments (Woolwax) specifically on seams, cavities, door sills, and rocker panels—anywhere a fluid can penetrate
– Ensure cavity injection is performed on frame rails and door sills, not just surface coating
– Apply Woolwax to the underside of bed floors and to the junction where the bed meets the frame
**Regular inspection** is essential. At least once a year (more often in Alberta), get under your truck with a light and mirror. Look for:
– Orange or brown staining, which indicates rust weeping from a hidden spot
– Small holes or perforations in metal
– Corrosion that’s spreading outward from a visible spot
Catching corrosion early, while it’s still small, is critical. Once it’s established, it’s harder to stop.
**Preventive maintenance** during the off-season also helps. Washing the undercarriage in spring and fall, even if roads aren’t actively salted, removes accumulated salt deposits and slows corrosion.
## The Uncomfortable Reality
Trucks with comprehensive professional rustproofing still develop hidden corrosion in some spots—it’s just much slower and less severe. The goal isn’t to achieve perfect, permanent immunity; it’s to slow the inevitable enough that the truck’s useful life isn’t compromised by structural degradation.
A truck protected with multiple layers of rustproofing (barrier coating, penetrating fluids, cavity injection) will have maybe 5–10% of the corrosion of an untreated truck. Those hidden spots will still corrode, but it will take twice as long, and the damage will be a fraction of what it would otherwise be.
For Alberta trucks, that’s the realistic goal: not perfection, but meaningful extension of the vehicle’s structural lifespan.
