Truck Undercoating in Calgary
Full-size truck protection — from half-tons to heavy-duty diesel
Why Trucks Need Undercoating More Than Cars
Full-size trucks have significantly more exposed undercarriage surface area than sedans or compact SUVs. A standard half-ton pickup — Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra — has a fully boxed or open-C frame that runs the entire length of the vehicle, separate from the body. This body-on-frame construction exposes the frame rails, crossmembers, and body mounts directly to road spray, salt, and debris in a way that unibody vehicles do not.
Heavy-duty trucks (2500/3500 class) add additional exposure through heavier-duty suspension components, larger differential housings, transfer case skid plates, and in diesel models, exposed exhaust aftertreatment systems (DPF, DEF tank) mounted underneath the chassis. These components represent thousands of dollars in replacement cost if corrosion compromises them.
Truck-Specific Corrosion Areas
Certain areas on trucks are consistently more corrosion-prone than others, and an effective undercoating treatment addresses each one with the appropriate product:
Frame Rails
The frame is the structural backbone of every body-on-frame truck. Frame rails are box-section or C-channel steel that trap moisture internally. External surfaces take direct road spray. In Alberta, frame perforation from corrosion is a common reason for heavy-duty trucks failing out-of-province safety inspections. Frame rails require both an external rubberized coating (3M #08883) and an internal cavity treatment (Woolwax lanolin) for complete protection.
Wheel Wells and Fender Liners
The inner wheel wells are the most heavily bombarded surfaces on any truck. Every rotation of the tire throws road debris, gravel, salt, and water directly at the inner fender area. OEM plastic fender liners provide some shielding, but the metal behind them still collects moisture and develops corrosion. 3M Rubberized Undercoating applied behind the liner creates a permanent stone-chip barrier.
Body Mounts and Cab Mounts
Body-on-frame trucks use rubber-bushed mounts to attach the cab and bed to the frame. These mounts trap salt and moisture between the frame bracket and the body bracket, creating an environment where corrosion accelerates rapidly. The rubber bushings themselves deteriorate when continuously exposed to road salt. Woolwax lanolin treatment around body mounts provides ongoing moisture displacement.
Leaf Springs and U-Bolts
Trucks with leaf-spring rear suspension (common on 2500/3500 class) have multiple spring leaves that trap salt between them. As the leaves flex, they grind corroded surfaces against each other, accelerating material loss. U-bolts, spring hangers, and shackle pins are all high-corrosion areas. These components need a non-drying, self-healing treatment that stays active despite constant flexing.
Exhaust and Aftertreatment
Diesel trucks with DPF (diesel particulate filter) and DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) systems have expensive aftertreatment components mounted under the chassis. While these operate at high temperatures during regeneration cycles, the mounting brackets and heat shields are vulnerable to corrosion. Protective coatings must be applied to brackets and shields only — never directly to exhaust components or DPF housings.
